Meet Sam.
Sam has cerebral palsy and is a quadriplegic, which means the disability includes all four extremities. Sam loves the outdoors and because of this, his family has put forth every effort they can to find ways to experience the world around him. He loves skiing and participating in running , cross country, biking events. Anything that will take him outdoors. He is always happy, and emulates Christ in all that he does. I feel honored to know him, I wanted to make sure you got to know him, too.
What is one thing you wish you could tell every person you meet, passing boundaries, and social norms?
There is many other things in this world that are much worse than being handicap. It’s defiantly not been easy by any means, but life isn’t meant to be easy. Right? I’m just like everyone! I have the same desires and dreams as anyone else. I know what is going on and I understand what everyone else is saying and doing. So I’m the same on the inside, my outside is my biggest obstacle!
What is the biggest challenge you have overcome?
One of my first biggest challenges was when I had hip surgery and was put into a body cast for eight weeks. We had just moved to Springville and talk about first impressions! Making friends and going to school were always challenging. I was lucky to have good teachers and friends along the way that made it a little bit easier. I still have some close friends from high school that have stayed close. College was very overwhelming, but a guy named Russ Bennett, who was my assistant made it a great experience.
What has been your grandest adventure?
My grandest adventure has been doing stuff that most people don’t do, like repelling, down hill skiing, water ski, horse back riding, hiking, running with friends and my family. I love to volunteer!
If you could do anything, anything at all, for just 24 hours, what would it be? (can be lots of things.)
If I could do anything I wanted for 24 hours I would WALK! Feed myself, drive a car, hike on my own. I would probably do simple things that people take for granted every day.
What is the first life lesson you remember learning?
My first life lesson I learned, people are going to stare at me. It stinks, but it true. I hate little kids asking what is wrong with me. So I learned to be patient well meaning curious people.
What is one experience you’ve had that you often share with others?
One of the most amazing things that happened to me, was that the Springville High School Principle nominated me to run the Paralympic torch for the city of Springville. I met some of the most amazing people and athletes! I got to run the torch in SLC with my dad and my brother Nick. I got to keep the torch and afterwards I was asked my youth groups and schools to share my experiences. So cool!
You are confined to your chair, and you always have a smile on your face, what are some things that have helped you remain so happy?
Staying cheerful is easy when you surround yourself with greatness and chose to serve others.
Could not get through this without crying. I know Sam, I love Sam and he will forever be one of my heroes. We could all learn so much from Sam. He has been handed trials in this life most of us will never truly know or understand and yet, he has risen above them and spreads happiness and love wherever he goes. Thanks for choosing Sam for One Portrait! His spirit and example should travel the continent!
Sam – You are the best and such an example to us all of love and service. You are a great example of Christlike love. Thanks for being you and for sharing your thoughts with us. People need to know how special you are!!
